Seniors' Corner

Come see the Dead Sea Scrolls

Plan to join us as we take a bus to see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota on Saturday, September 18. The scrolls, some of which are more than 2,000 years old, include fragments of the earliest known texts of the Bible. After their initial discovery by a shepherd in caves along the shores of Israel's Dead Sea near the ancient settlement of Qumran, archaeologists have excavated and pieced together thousands of scroll fragments into more than 900 separate documents, from biblical manuscripts and commentary to religious legal writings. The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit brings some of these archaeological treasures to the Science Museum, along with artifacts that will give us a glimpse into life in Israel during the Second Temple Period. The exhibit will also showcase the Saint John's Bible, the first complete, handwritten and illuminated Bible to be commissioned in 500 years.

Please meet at noon in the church parking lot. The bus leaves at 12:15 p.m. and will return to the church by 4 p.m.. The cost (include the bus ride) is $30 for seniors (60 and older) and children (ages 4-12) and $34 for ages 13-59. Please call Susan Mullin at 612-781-3167 or Blanche Burroughs at 612-789-0385 if you have questions. A sign-up sheet is available in the Commons; we must have your payments by September 12.

And you don't have to be a senior to join us for this event!

September 20 and October 4: St. Philip's Lutheran Church.
October 18 and November 1: Christ the King Lutheran Church.

The cost is $38 for the series or $12 per session if purchased in advance. Otherwise, the cost is $40 for the series or $14 per session if purchased at the door. For further information or to register, contact St. Philip's Lutheran Church at 763-571-1500. (Faith was host for two of the forums last fall.)

Attention Seniors

Our "Seniors' Corner" at the church has a collection of area senior newsletters for you to take a look, including the Voice of Experience (Coon Rapids), Fridley Senior News, Mary Ann Senior Center News (Blaine) and the Medica Skyway Senior Center newsletter. There's a notepad so you can jot down the phone number to call if you would like to receive any of the newsletters. A lot of helpful information and events are found in these newsletters, and most of them are free. Other booklets with a variety of information are also on the shelves in our "Seniors' Corner."

Our Mission

Faith's Senior Adult Ministry was initiated in October 2007 with the formation of an Adult Council of 10 people. The goal is to provide a varied program of events for seniors, but always with an open invitation for all ages.

Senior LinkAge Line: 1-800-333-2433

The Senior LinkAge Line is a free telephone information and assistance service, which makes it easy for older adults and their families to find community resources. Senior LinkAge Line can connect you with services such as transportation, home health care, housing, food, grocery delivery, legal and financial help, housework and home repairs, employment, volunteering and caregiver support.

It also provides comprehensive, objective information about Medicare and health insurance options.

The line is a service of the Minnesota Board on Aging and Minnesota Area Agencies on Aging.

There are a few copies of the Senior LinkAge 2010 Health Care Choices booklet in the Senior's Corner in the Commons. Come check it out.
